Basket Weaving Classes

A new year has begun with many conventions coming in the next twelve months.  If you haven't been to a basket weaving convention before its a great place to learn a new skill and meet new friends.  There are several basket styles to weave, each with unique characteristics which make it a pleasure to create.

Weaving baskets is a relaxing and gratifying hobby. It lets you release your creative juices and create beautiful, useful works of art. If you would like to learn basketry, Nathan teaches at several basketry conventions throughout the year. He also holds regular classes at his home studio.

Texas Basket Weavers Association  First Annual Weaving Conferance  January 19th-22nd, 2012

The Dennisport

This affordable basket is quick and easy to make. The body is woven of TigerAsh ™, a supreme material for molded baskets. The rim and handles are American cherry. Most students will finish the basket in under three hours which makes it a great end-of-convention class. Students will learn mold weaving and slotted rimming techniques. At any later time students can fit out their baskets with a number of lid styles.

Hyannis Picnic Purse

This is my most popular class ever. I have reduced the price to give you the most basket for your time and money. It is an all wooden basket. The body is woven of American ash with all cherry rim and lid with brass fittings. For this great value basket, I've added cherry handles as well. Students will learn a good technique for starting mold woven baskets as well as utilizing a slotted rim. Students will also learn finishing techniques to create a beautiful basket from start to finish.

Nantucket Party Purse

The base, rims, lid and handle are all made from American cherry and with bone findings. The hinges and magnetic closure are stitched leather. This purse has the best of both traditional and modern design resulting in the most useful of Nantucket purses. A Nantucket purse is high fashion; as such they are most often used as an evening bag. This purse is sized just for that, going to dinner and a show. You will be proud to say, “Yes it is a Nantucket and I made it!”

Woven Together in Western Kentucky  Weaver's Retreat   March  1st-3rd, 2012

Bushwhacker Friendship Basket

This historic basket was once thought to have been made by the Shakers.  Nathan was the discoverer of these hidden basket makers and the author of their intriguing story; Legand of the Bushwhacker Basket.   Made of pounded black ash, like the originals, students will learn Bushwhacker weaving techniques, including their unique handle design.

Falmouth with Burl Lid

Students will learn mold weaving using TigerAsh ™ splint.  This basket features a drop-on lid finished with a stunning Carpathian Elm Burl veneer. The low design makes the basket useful for a things. The rich tones of the burl wood make it an elegant jewelery box. Students can take the knowledge gained from this class and make one of the dozen or so Cap Cod baskets built on the simple, inexpensive mold.

Shaker Reproduction Mt Lebanon Carrier in Cherry

I am now able to bring my students the much-requested carrier in cherry. Students will weave on molds that were copied directly from the Shaker originals on loan from Old Chatham, NY. The basket is woven of pound black ash splint with cherry rims and handle prepared using the same methods the Shakers developed and perfected. Each student will make a museum quality reproduction.

North Carolina Basketry Guild "The Woven Journey"        March 15th-18th, 2012

Sweetheart Picnic Basket

This is the most elegant of picnic baskets. Everyone stops to take a look. It is woven with a double layer of Nate’s TigerAsh ™. Students will learn this double-weaving technique to create a basket which is the ultimate in strength and durability. Students will assemble the previously-woven lid to the body of the basket and attach the dual cherry handles with large bone findings and solid brass attachments. What a great value! This is a rich basket that always gets attention whether it’s at the beach or at the fresh-air concert. You will never be prouder than to say, “I made it!”

The Manhattan

The city of Manhattan is glitz, fashion and elegance.  Nathan has reproduced the feelings of the city through this basket.  the steel two-tones pull is acentuated by the black leather strapping and a cherry lid.  The TigerAsh ™ is easy to weave over the wooden mold.  Studnets will learn molded weaving techniques and method to insert the leather straps.

The Shakers created many baskets in their time.  Among the most prized are the Fancy Baskets; "Fancy" meaning the best of its kind.  Many of these were smaller versions of the originals, called "smalls".  Studnets will use molded weaving techniques to create this Apple Basket "Smalls" in the same way as the Shakers did.
